[@redveil]’s ‘Learn 2 Swim’ Puts An Insightful Spin on Intoxicating Rap
redveil is at the cusp of adulthood. And yet, it feels like he has lived several lifetimes. On this latest album, ‘Learn 2 Swim’, the Maryland native proves his penmanship to be no less pensive than that of a philosophy major. Snapshots of the rapper-producer’s past and present flicker through the album, leaving residue on the brain. Keeping his head above the water that floods one’s mind at the best of times, his words overflow with glimmers of forward-looking hope and flutters of reminiscence here and there.
At just 11-years-old, redveil was most likely holed up in his room experimenting with beats on Fruity Loops. Taking inspiration from The Internet and Tyler (who later gave praises to the young artist), it was those isolated moments that, in part, do seem to have contributed to the confidence and seldom-found maturity in any 18-year-old.
Lead-single “p.g. Baby” shows his consistency as an artist, entirely revamping a classic Just Blaze and Roc-A-Fella beat with twirls of 90s nostalgia. Understanding the thesis statement from his song ‘diving board’, an old age concept of a kid overcoming their fear of jumping in the pool is expanded to be a metaphor about propelling yourself into adulthood. Speaking on this, Marcus says “MY saving grace in my DNA: we Black/ That Leave me with two choices, get left or rock and adapt,” he raps over a coppice of saxophone and piano. The whole project is a testimony to his talent and intertwines between jazzy soulful hooks to catchy melodic verses.
