INSIDE: Victory Lap x Play Piem Presents GOT NO DATA [@playpiem]

Spaces like Got No Data are pivotal for the culture, serving as platforms for up-and-coming artists to shine. In a world saturated with digital experiences, where screens dominate our lives, it’s rare to stumble upon an event that possesses the power to captivate and immerse us back into real life. However, Victory Lap x Play Piem x Got No Data managed to do just that.

In a collision of creative forces Got No Data united culture hotspots to host the biggest party and rap cypher of the summer. Breaking away from their usual spots, this event took place in Play Piem’s first music studio – a renovated garage in Peckham. With Magnums selling, artists shelling, and t-shirts being signed, it felt like a living archive personified. Every beat and rhyme drove the crowd into a frenzy of excitement and celebration. It is in the words of BXKS herself that the essence of the event can’t truly be grasped: “It was an experience that you had to be there to understand.”

In case you’re wondering, Got No Data is an event that originated from BXKS’s playlist of the same name. The name “Got No Data” is derived from BXKS’s past experience of not having mobile data on her phone. She humorously references the fact that she got her first-ever phone contract this year, so now she can say she has data. Inspired by her playlist, BXKS decided to turn it into an event that primarily focuses on rap cyphers.

For the event, BXKS collaborated with Victory Lap, known for their comfortable and intimate inside studio cyphers, to bring the experience to a live audience and it was only right that she was the first MC to do such. This collaboration marked a departure from Victory Lap’s usual setup and allowed for a unique and memorable night of celebration and creativity. And of course Play Piem which she said ‘was a must – that’s family’, who are known for merging community and authentic music through events (they get it right every single time).

BXKS brought together an incredible lineup of artists who showcased their unparalleled talent. From the smooth flows of Saiming and SamRecks to the raw energy of Zino Vinci, Ayrtn and Reek0. Many artists at the event delivered a vibe that bought us back to the essence. Despite their diverse musical backgrounds and genres, these artists effortlessly brought their A-game, freestyling over beats provided by the DJ that had everyone on their feet.

The event proved to be a groundbreaking affair, with plans already brewing for future cyphers and events. BXKS expressed her desire to host another event by the end of the year. The perfect blend of emerging talent and an ambiance steeped in cultural significance left a lasting impression. Events like these play a vital role in the culture by providing platforms for up-and-coming artists to showcase their skills, connect with a passionate audience, and forge alliances that can propel their careers forward. I think by providing platforms for artists to showcase their talent, these events empower, amplify, and nurture the unique voices and identities within the Black British music scene. These motives serve as catalysts for change, recognition, and celebration. So in other words ‘MOTION’.

If you weren’t there, you missed out on a good night that will be talked about for a long time.  But don’t take it from me, you’ll hear about it very soon.
