Sekou’s debut EP ‘Out of Mind’ cements his rising star status…
Sekou, the Leicester-born London-based artist, has unveiled his highly anticipated debut EP, ‘Out of Mind.’ Comprising five tracks that showcase his incredible talent and versatility, this project solidifies Sekou as a rising star in the music industry. With production from notable talents such as Yakob, Sounwave, and Cirkut, ‘Out of Mind’ presents a range of soulful ballads and jazzy up-tempo tracks, demonstrating the depth and variety in the young artist’s sound.
The EP opens with ‘Forgiving Myself’, immediately immersing you with its high-tempo and deep-stirring vocals. The captivating nature of Sekou’s voice takes centre stage and draws you in with its immediacy. ‘Better Man’, the second track, taps into a wellspring of powerful emotions and flexes a beautiful composition of keys which combined with the choral elements, make this song a standout. It’s easy to envision how striking it would be when performed live. Moving on to the third track, “Be With You,” Sekou evokes a jazz and R&B-infused sound to create a warm and inviting atmosphere, allowing listeners to immerse themselves in the complexities of love and loss explored within the lyrics.
‘You and I’, the Bossa Nova-infused fourth track, takes a different direction, incorporating plucked strings and crooning vocals. It exudes a sense of escapism and harmonic cadence. Concluding with ‘Too Young’, a powerful and emotionally charged track that showcases Sekou’s willingness to delve deep into his feelings and lay bare his heart. The raw vulnerability in his delivery creates a poignant experience and leaves a lasting impact. While ‘Out of Mind’ offers a collection of standout tracks, it also leaves a space of wanting. The decision to focus on developing singles that highlight Sekou’s range and musical prowess is understandable but is also slightly safe when you take into account his already-developed musical prowess. ‘Out of Mind’ leaves a gnawing craving for a fully cohesive concept album, something that Sekou is more than capable of. Perhaps this approach is meant to act as a tantalising tease, ensuring that we’re all hooked for when he brings out his biggest guns. Regardless, ‘Out of Mind’ is nothing short of a remarkable debut EP.
