Five For Friday ft [@chillforme_], [@nenny__on], [@partynextdoor], + more
Five For Friday is back again with 5 releases from the past week you should pay attention to.
Five for Friday is back again giving you 5 great tracks/projects for your Friday. Friday is essentially the most important day of the week musically, and typically a lot of music drops on Friday’s. Friday is the day that the official charts are announced letting us know who holds the coveted number one position. To make life a little easier this Friday we are giving you 5 of our top picks that have recently dropped to start off your weekend listening.
Iman Lake – For The Birds
Iman Lake is currently on a very impressive run of singles, and he really does singles properly. Working alongside frequent collaborator and director Azeez Bello he provides the same level of quality to the visual experience as he does the audio experience. ‘For The Birds’ follows up from ‘Neptune’ and ‘Stranger Things’ and makes a departure from the animated visuals into what can only be described as a short film, or at least a film trailer. The mellow and contemplative track works well as a soundtrack to the visuals but even without them, the honest and reflective subject matter allows the audio to stand alone.
Nenny – Tequila (COLORS)
Nenny is the latest in line of international stars to be making waves on COLORS. The Cape-Verdean Portuguese rapper and singer graced the COLORS set with a sublime performance of her latest single ‘Tequila’. Whilst performing largely in Portuguese Nenny proves that music overcomes all barriers as even without knowing the language the feel good anthem still hits all the right notes. It’s catchy, the melody is enticing, and the performance was delivered with real conviction that makes you able to feel its message of overcoming and hope even if you don’t understand the language. Her 2020 EP Aura made a great start in establishing Nenny‘s name but the COLORS should push her to even greater heights.
PARTYNEXTDOOR – COLOUR
PND is back, or at least his some of his most loved work is now available on streaming platforms. COLOURS is not a new body of work, it is a combination of his 2014 EP COLOURS and its follow up COLOURS 2 released as one full length project. Interesting to note is that this is the way the project was initially supposed to have released in 2014, but things clearly changed. Whilst for long time fans of PARTY this is just a time to throw things back, for newer fans this follows on nicely from the 2020 PARTYPACK drop of unreleased songs to introduce them to the sounds that made PND a household name.
Jay Lewn – Topdown
Jay Lewn today drops the mellow alt-Pop number ‘Topdown’ that treads the line between Pop and R&B. Jay Lewn is a name familiar amongst the more underground scene and is someone that has had quite a bit of traction. Having had the support of BBC Introducing as well as Sofar Sounds, Jay went on to collaborate with names like Che Lingo and JGrrey. On this latest number, he shows his penchant for creating minimalistic, soulful sounds that provide the perfect backdrop for his distinctively colourful lyrical twists. The lyrical twists on this occasion being about the tumultuous nature of a ‘ride or die’ type of romance.
Dom Porter x Violet Jones ft. Mercy’s Cartel & [ K S R ] – Burden
‘Burden’ marks the second single from producer and artist combo Dom Porter and Violet Jones. Only this time they enlisted R&B talents [ K S R ] and Mercy’s Cartel to provide some additional variety to the track. It is a relatively traditional R&B record with a few modern twists blended in across the production, so it feels familiar and easily accessible. The record takes a questioning tone from the perspective of an admirer towards a love interest, which is a perspective that’s both a staple of R&B but also one not used all that frequently anymore. It’s an easy listen and showcases some great talent from across the UK on a track, so it should definitely get a listen this Friday.
