BBC’s ‘A New Generation of Nigerian Royalty’ explores the interconnection of faith and power
BBC’s latest audio-documentary, ‘A New Generation of Nigerian Royalty,’ hones in on the lives of Nigeria’s young kings and queens. These Gen Z royals are beginning to disrupt the status quo of what traditional leadership looks like as their faith impacts their approach to power. They are tasked with reconciling their positions with their belief in a God their ancestors rejected. But the documentary does not just explore what makes the royals ‘different.’ Instead, the episodes explore how the royals tackle the age-old issues that have followed their generations. Questions about the personal sacrifices that come with rulership and whether ‘normalcy’ is possible are explored in these short episodes.
Although Tobi Olujinmi produced this audio documentary, it stems from a wider, black female-led production label called Hill 5.14 Media. While an upcoming label, Hill 5.14 Media, does not shy away from the stories that often go unheard. When discussing the program, Olujinmi describes how the goal was to “show the world yet another side of the continent,” focusing on the “clever, resolute and faith-filled young rulers leading with a belief for a better Nigeria.”
