NEW TRACK OF THE WEEK: [@SerineKarthage] raps her philosophy on ‘Ruler’
Serine Karthage uncovers all in anecdotal anthem ‘Ruler’
In the video for ‘Ruler’, co-directed by the artist herself, Serine paces toward the camera, facing the viewer head on as she raps, dances and smiles. Her performance lies somewhere between that of a spoken word poet, expressively baring all to an audience, and an animated conversation with a close friend. The artist bounces cartoonish-ly, with a smile that can only express the fulfilment of achieving against all odds.
But this vibe carries through further than the visual, it’s what enlightens the lyrics of the single ‘Ruler’. Written at a low-point of the artist’s life, the hook “I’m gonna be a ruler and that” envisions the track as an anthem of survival and a self-fulfilling mantra.
Over the span of 2 minutes and 50 seconds, Karthage’s tone is conversational, playful, and street smart. Her voice is smooth and glides effortlessly on a trap-influenced beat by producer, Ry Tunes. On this catchy single, which is the artist’s first release of this year, she proves herself as a keen story-teller and a glowing addition to UK rap.
‘Ruler’ is the first track to be released from Serine Karthage’s debut EP. The EP is set for release early 2019, so keep an eye out on Serine Karthage’s Spotify here:
