Something About Abbie ? – [@KhadejiaG] Speaks To [@AbbieMayMUA] About AFW
“I was such a tomboy when I was little”
Professional make up artist, Abbie May, who has worked with celebrities from the likes of Raye, Novelist, Vick hope, Craig David and Lethal Bizzle, has mastered her team leading skills being head MUA of AFW for the fourth week running.
At just 19 years of age, Abbie has already done make up for Yasmin Evans, Melissa Steel and Maya Jama which gave her the confidence and reassurance to keep going with her passion, even though she was still working in the beauty retail industry.
One job she looks forward to every year without a doubt is African Fashion Week. She says “It’s fun, exciting and exhausting but all at the same time. I love working with the team, working with the same faces and new faces and having a good time. Backstage is mental! I always try to go out to the front of house and see everyones outfits and make up”
Starting off studying at college doing a two year course and working in retail, Abbie’s career kick started as her “Sister was good at make up and learnt from her” and before she knew it, she had clients before her first year of college.
We all know the power of social media nowadays and it worked to Abbie’s advantage back in 2014, when she received a message on Facebook asking if she would do Make up for AFW. Not having any work experience working behind backstage during fashion week before, she had 2 weeks to find 10 make up artists and quickly got a good team behind her.
This year, Abbie has used both Friday and Saturday to create two very different looks. Friday she used bronze, gold, nude and glossy colours (Picture Below) and on Saturday she used more bold and neon colours (Picture Above) which will stand out on darker tones more. This will also be popular for the spring summer 2019.
