Five For Friday ft. [@iamodeal], [@Santandave1], [@JulsOnIt] + more
Five For Friday is back again with 5 releases from the past week you should pay attention to.
Five For Friday is back again giving you 5 great tracks/projects for your Friday. Friday is essentially the most important day of the week musically, and typically a lot of music drops on Friday’s. Friday is the day that the official charts are announced, which lets us know who holds the coveted number one position. We’ve had another very busy week of great music so to make life a little easier this Friday we are giving you 5 of our top picks that have recently dropped to start off your weekend listening.
Blanco x NSG – Surveillance
This is a collab we didn’t know we needed and no one disappoints despite the seemingly odd pairing. ‘Surveillance’ is taken from Blanco‘s upcoming project City of God which is set to release early next month and based on this offering is a project everyone should be taking notice of. Production-wise it is comfortably in the realm of NSG but Blanco sits surprisingly well on it providing a verse that was refreshing and a great contrast to the NSG boys’ offerings. This one has dropped at the perfect time with the sun shining and is the exact vibe you want to relax or shake a leg to.
Odeal – Karma
Let’s just be honest at this point, Odeal doesn’t really miss when he drops and ‘Karma’ is no exception to that. The self produced record sees the South London talent flexing a number of his sides on the track showcasing once again that he is truly special. The vocals are R&B-like, but there is an Afrobeats swagger in that delivery mixed in with pockets of Yoruba and production that you’d have to class as Alte and somehow it all comes together to create a vibe. There’s nobody that is better placed to sell the record than Odeal so I’ll leave you with what he had to say about the track:
“Karma details a man’s spiritual experience stimulated by the intimate interactions between him and his significant other. The song’s candid lyrics are expressions of his pleasure at making a deeper connection with his partner”
Make sure you don’t sleep on ‘You Or Me’ which was also released alongside ‘Karma’.
Kwengface – Chef
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again Zone 2 have been firing on all cylinders in 2021 and they are yet to disappoint. Kwengface in particular has been extremely active whether dropping solo tracks or linking up with the rest of Zone 2 and even linking up with Backroad Gee for a banger. ‘Chef’ is one the people have been waiting on after Kwengface teased the track at the beginning of the ‘Tetley’ video which was released at the beginning of last month. On ‘Chef’ we get the unflinching content you’d expect based on the title and artist but delivered with a variety of flows and the enigmatic flair that make Kwengface such an exciting artist.
Juls Ft. Sam Wise, Kadiata & Knucks – Wicked
This one was a cheat code, you can’t have these three artists on a song and not get greatness. Each of course brings their own unique flavour to the track and they each get slight tweaks to the production across their respective verses to help punctuate eaches strengths. Speaking of production, it was of course handled by Juls who has made his name internationally with his talents being called upon by the likes of Burna Boy and WizKid as well as getting the nod from Kiss FM to host their dedicated Afrobeats show. He brings that polish and experience to the record and it is one that you will experience best on big speakers or blasting it in the car. It is a vibe and a great teaser of what’s to come on Juls‘ upcoming project.
Dave – We’re All Alone In This Together
Following on from his debut award winning album Dave had big boots to be filled by We’re All Alone In This Together. The project boasts some impressive names on the feature front James Blake, Snoh Aalegra, WizKid and more aid the young star to deliver another body of work that doesn’t skip on the meaningful content. There is also a big surprise on one of the tracks but I’ll let you discover that on your own. It is a quintessential Dave project, it’s not something to be taken in quickly and the overall tone is pretty serious. But just as with Psychodrama there are moments of release in the tension with some levity in the more upbeat cuts that counter the otherwise very weighty subject matter.
