Five For Friday ft. [@realmostack], [@BLOW_band_], Syd + more
Five For Friday is back again with 5 releases from the past week you should pay attention to.
Five For Friday is back again giving you 5 great tracks/projects for your Friday. Friday is essentially the most important day of the week musically, and typically a lot of music drops on Friday’s. Friday is the day that the official charts are announced, which lets us know who holds the coveted number one position. We’ve had another very busy week of great music so to make life a little easier this Friday we are giving you 5 of our top picks that have recently dropped to start off your weekend listening.
MoStack – Ride
MoStack is back after a well deserved break with new single and video ‘Ride’. We need MoStack‘s energy, that penchant for balancing hood energy with a vibe that makes you want to get up and dance. It’s a powerful track to return with and has a slight pivot in the tone of his music. Whilst still a quintessential MoStack track it feels a lot more serious, there’s less of the type of tongue in cheek lyricism you were probably expecting and with it being his first track back it almost sets a precedent of what to expect. But only time will tell, and regardless we know there’s going to be some great music on the way.
Unknown T – Driller Shit
Unknown T is keeping up his sublime run as he amps up his project rollout with another strong single in ‘Driller Shit’. This year Unknown T has shown us that he has a mastery of his own sound and that his sound isn’t as tightly definable as some may have presumed with the way the Drill label is lazily thrown on him. Even on ‘Driller Shit’ the flow used on the hook seems to nod to Chicago rapper G Herbo‘s flow used on ‘Killer Shit’ and more notably his collaboration with Nicki Minaj ‘Chiraq’. ‘Driller Shit’ is an ode to Drill from both sides of the pond and sits nicely in contrast to previous releases ‘Goodums’ and ‘Wonderland’.
Syd – Fast Car
Syd gifts us with the smooth Funk fuelled anthem ‘Fast Car’ and visuals directed by Ethan Nelson and Graham Epstein. Speaking on the record she said, “I wanted to make something for the gay Black girls. I want them to see themselves in this and in me.” And she definitely delivers that across both the visuals and the record. It is a fun but powerful record with Syd‘s sultry vocals lacing the Prince-esque bass and electric guitars. The track packs a punch and it doesn’t lose it on further listens back, it is a record you will definitely be going back to over and over again.
Angeloumae – Dance For Me
There’s been a bit of a wait for new music with Angeloumae but on July 13th she was back with two releases ‘Dance For Me’ and ‘End of the Day’. It was tough to choose which one to highlight but ‘Dance For Me’ slightly edges it. The slight Dancehall influences paired with Angeloumae‘s captivating vocals fully immerse listeners in the soundscape she’s created. Speaking on the song, Angeloumae shares, “I was inspired to write this when I first heard the beat, I fell in love with the heavy bass and even the sample. I knew from the beginning, I wanted to make women feel more dominant, sexy, and empowered.”
BLOW Ft. Anna Majidson – Shake The Disease
I will say it now and I will say it again, the French have a different kind of sauce in the way they deliver. The BLOW trio made up of Quentin (vocals), Thomas (bass, formerly also a touring member of Her) and Jean-Etienne (guitar) delivered incredibly on their COLORS session with added vocals by Anna Majidson. ‘Shake The Disease’ isn’t a love song despite its soulful groove that aids itself so well to discussing love (think Childish Gambino ‘Redbone’). Instead, the track is “a call for help written during a complicated time where we were losing our marks.” Says BLOW, and that makes sense with it being written amidst the pandemic. Look out for their upcoming project which releases soon.
