Five For Friday ft [@officialsl], [@officialAvelino], [@TE_dness ] + more
Five For Friday is back again with 5 releases from the past week you should pay attention to.
Five for Friday is back again giving you 5 great tracks/projects for your Friday. Friday is essentially the most important day of the week musically, and typically a lot of music drops on Friday’s. Friday is the day that the official charts are announced letting us know who holds the coveted number one position. To make life a little easier this Friday we are giving you 5 of our top picks that have recently dropped to start off your weekend listening.
SL x M1llionz – Versus
The ever elusive SL makes his musical return enlisting the help of Brum’s biggest star at the moment M1llionz for ‘Versus’. This is a collab we didn’t expect at all but it does kind of make sense in a weird way. The duo each has their own very distinct flow and cadence and technically operate in the same space, although the kind of Drill SL is most known for and the Drill M1llionz is best known for aren’t that similar but on ‘Versus’ they find a common ground. The menacing beat which features some crazy 808 slides provides a base that both can thrive off and their back to back 16s allow them to showcase their respective skillsets without getting repetitive.
Avelino – Four Seasons Freestyle (Spring Edition)
Avelino is one of the best lyricists in the country, arguably in the world, but one thing he isn’t moved by is the industry standard constantly releasing model. Avelino last released a project in 2017 and since then slowed down his releases – for reference in 2020 he released 2 singles and the year prior he released 3 and one freestyle. With his output slowing it’s easy to understand why in this microwave attention span of music that this new freestyle hasn’t drawn more attention. Across its just under 3 minute run time, he proves his mastery for words yet again over grandiose and opulent production. Luckily we know that more music is coming as this is just the first freestyle from his Four Seasons series.
TE dness – Price On My Head
TE dness isn’t letting anyone rest with the way he’s releasing. For an artist that has had a question mark against his name at points due to lack of consistency with releasing he’s now almost unrecognisable. Its consistency paired with quality, and as much as I’m biased as a fan I honestly don’t think he’s missed with any of his recent releases. ‘Price On My Head’ is probably the most catchy of the recent releases, it helps that the production is probably the most uptempo since ‘Alphabet’ last year featuring Ghetts. But as always it’s the ability to paint a picture with real clarity that makes TE one of the best and that’s clear to see here.
JGrrey – Down
JGrrey is a name that should be on your radar by now – COLORS, touring with Billie Eilish – she might not be the biggest, but she is definitely one of the most talented. On latest release ‘Down’ we hear her silky vocals lace the guitar led production creating a vibe that you can’t help but enjoy. It has a number of inspirations at play across it. Musically the track is Jazz inspired but visually it makes nods to Japanese horror films, specifically ones from the 80s, and the video was actually self-directed by J. It is a complete dive into the world of JGrrey and a trip I think everyone should explore.
KIRBY – Boyz II Men
KIRBY isn’t new to this having initially made her name as a writer working on tracks with Rihanna, Kanye West, Beyonce and more before breaking out on her own. In 2020 she really had her breakout year as a solo artist after releasing her 7 track EP SIS which led to here being featured on NPR’s Tiny Desk, Issa Rae‘s show Insecure and more. Back with her first entry for 2021 ‘Boyz II Men’ we see KIRBY in the kind of form we want to see for the rest of the year and beyond. The record is a slice of retro-futurist R&B that reflects on mistakes made in love by the songstress in the past. You can’t sleep on this one.
