Eliza Legzdina [@legzdinae] drops new track ‘Tom & Jerry’

Relative newbie Eliza Legzdina releases visuals to her playful single ‘Tom & Jerry’.

‘Tom & Jerry’ is only the second single from East London’s Eliza Legzdina. Eliza is Latvian born and was actually classically trained in singing opera since the age of 3. Yet that training has clearly taken a backseat to other influences that can be heard in her sound – even though you can’t quite categorize her sound completely yet. There are strong spoken word elements to parts of her delivery, but the more notable influence to her style is R&B’s more alternate soundscape as well as having a slight Pop feel to her.

On ‘Tom & Jerry’ all of these can be felt. There are elements strongly reminiscent of Doja Cat on the track, and production-wise even notes of Kaytranada. The track is a feminist statement that flips the outdated rhetoric surrounding women’s dating lives. Eliza unashamedly sings

“I’m looking for something casual/

Baby will this be an obstacle”

which is a narrative I’m sure plenty of women would support as they are often portrayed as pining after love at all costs. On top of this, there are some more sexually explicit elements in the track that work, but could definitely cause a few raised eyebrows on first listens. All interwoven amongst this landscape of dating is Eliza‘s increasingly busy music life and how she balances the two.

The visuals play on the track’s narrative and have Eliza in a number of scenarios with various partners. Not only does she echo the romantic elements of the song across the video, but she also echoes the more fun stuff too. The director and designer did a good job of adapting the set to suit their needs, especially considering they only used one location for the shoot. On top of that, the styling across the board was very fitting and only added to the immersion of the video.

‘Tom & Jerry’ is a good second release from a clearly very talented artist. Eliza has already teased that she has more coming on her Instagram, so expect the music to come consistently throughout the year.
