Afrosurf will be the first book to document African surf culture [@mamiwatasurf]

Mami Wata is a premium African surf brand on a mission to share the power of African surf with the world.

Afrosurf will be the first book to extensively document the life and culture of African surfers. The surfer archetype has long been one of the blonde, tanned, blue-eyed man, popularised by media and television. But now, in an upcoming book titled Afrosurf – currently raising money through Kickstarter – premium brand; Mami Wata is on a mission to change this narrative.

African surf brand Mami Wata (which translates to Mammy Water is a water spirit venerated in West, Central, and Southern Africa, and in the African diaspora). Mami Wata is organising the creation of this book and hopes that it will help redefine and expand how the world looks at surf culture.

AFROSURF will explore the power of African surf and its growing, invigorating, and inspirational influence on global surf and street culture. Together with Selema Masekela and some of Africa’s finest photographers, writers, creatives, and surfers, AFROSURF explores original African surf culture from Morocco to Somalia, Senegal, Mozambique, South Africa and beyond.”
