Labrum SS23: “Freedom of Movement”

Labrum introduces SS23 “Freedom of Movement” collection with a show beyond borders at London Fashion Week.

The newest Labrum’s SS23 kicked off the second day of London Fashion Week with a runway accompanied by the corresponding film ‘On Freedom Of Movement (wi de muv), with a collection inspired by Foday Dumbuya’s heritage.

The collection reflects the ideology of a borderless society where the merging of cultures would coexist with constant migration. Labrum’s multicultural design team was the key pillar in developing the concept by sharing family pictures that resembled their backgrounds to celebrate the core of unity in Labrum’s universe. A lively performance by Freetown Uncut and Drizilik and DJ Rampage, who flew to London from Sierra Leone for the show, represented the energetic culture and great form that music coming out of Africa currently embodies.

Running through the catwalk, we see lightweight tailored suits layered with coats, shorts and patchwork jackets, coloured with touches of blue, green, and brown, a reference to Mark Rothko’s palette, which lets the colours blend to represent the idea of borderlessness. The same influence is presented in the LABRUM London monogram with the placement of borders and the print repetition symbolising the idea of borders being placed around us, with the movement of immigrants going against them. Unavoidable and irresistible were the headpieces designed by one of the most regarded London’s milliners, Lucy Barlow, encapsulating the emblematic Labrum’s mark look.

The post-show reserved an exclusive t-shirt created in collaboration with Choose love, an organisation supporting refugee communities worldwide, available to purchase with the proceeds donated to charity.

This season, the collection was showcased simultaneously with the screening of ‘On Freedom Of Movement (wi de muv)’, a film curated and directed by Julianknxx, a frequent Labrum collaborator, produced in partnership with LABRUM & ODI for the Africa-Europe Mayors’ Dialogue.

The film conceptualises the necessity and inevitability of movement and the ability of the environments we live in to create the space we need, which sparked thoughts and reflection on the question: “If the world were borderless and we were all free to move, what would we choose to do?”. A good question to begin London Fashion Week with from an exceptional and beyond borders Labrum SS23 show.
