8 Autumn/Winter Fashion Trends You Need To Know About
Whilst SS24 fashion month is still rolling on, it’s definitely not Spring yet! What we have been seeing at the SS24 shows and events however, is the fashionistas of the 4 major fashion cities rocking their favourite pieces from last season; AW23. So, here are the 8 trends we expect to see in stores this Autumn/Winter.
- Disco ball cosplay
Glitter and glamour is a yearly trend for Autumn Winter thanks to the plethora of festive parties, but this season will be especially sparkly due to queen Bey and her renaissance sparkle. We can expect silver to shine brighter than all the other hues this Autumn/Winter. If you can’t fully commit to the silver trend with a monochromatic silver disco ball look, simply swap out your gold jewellery for silver pieces or just opt for a pop of glitter with silver accessories.
- Cosy but cute
Knitwear is a practical way to stay warm in the cooler months but that doesn’t mean that style has to be left by the wayside. Knitted clothing such as dresses, jumpers, hats and scarves are the first thing that may come to mind but recently knitted earrings have grown in popularity. Knitwear is also the easiest way to add pattern and colour to your look without having to sacrifice comfort, warmth or practicality. Opt for a figure hugging knitted midi dress to show off your shape without freezing, or pair an oversized jumper with fitted trousers to play with proportions. Try out a classier aesthetic and layer a longer flared hemline fine knit dress over some boots and under a classic trench. It’s giving grown up.
- Fold me please
The tail end of the 2010s and early 2020s saw the rise of the cowl; cowl neck, cowl back, you name it, we were howling for cowls. While we are seeing fewer and fewer cowl detailing on the runway, texture and shape will always be a fashion favourite. This season, it’s pleats. Pleating is a (theoretically) simple technique of doubling fabric back on itself and securing it in place, dating all the way back to ancient Egypt. We’ve seen an exponential rise in its mainstream popularity especially, Issey Miyake’s iconic unisex pleats plisse designs (and the inevitable dupes) following his death in August 2022. This summer, teeny tiny tennis skirts also had their moment and for autumn winter the pleats love will continue. From corporate-esque midi length wool skirts to sexy leather mini skirts and even pleats on bags this IS the texture of the season.
- Ruby Woo, Ruby Red, Scarlet Letter, Filled with Dread
With Daniel Lee’s departure from Bottega we saw the fall of the Bottega Green, but have no fear for the colour of the season is here. Say hello to fiery, fun, sassy, bold red. Of course, red in winter is not new all thanks to Christmas, but, this season we can pinpoint the explosion of red hues back to Maximilian Davis’ FERRAGAMO debut. When you have a young Black British designer with an exciting eponymous brand taking over an iconic family owned Italian fashion brand, you’re guaranteed to have all eyes on his debut. Maximilian’s first order of business was to change the logo and brand name, swapping Salvatore Ferragamo for FERRAGAMO, and a new era was born. With the SS23 collection, Davis didn’t disappoint and his use of red was truly stunning, from the runway (carpet colour included!) to the campaign imagery, to the monochromatic looks. Keep it simple with some red makeup or earrings or go all out with opaque red tights, another AW23 runway favourite.
- Hide from the haters but make it fashion
Sometimes fashion can be impractical but thankfully with this trend that’s not the case. Oversized scarfs are back again and for the sake of avoiding colds and flu we hope they return every year. Hide from the haters on your less than glamorous days or choose a bold pattern as a stand out piece, all that really matters is that it works and keeps you warm! For that added layer of chic anonymity add a pair of oversized sunglasses.
- Soft to touch
Use fluffy, furry textures to bring the comfort of loungewear into your street style. Large oversized fur coats in bright colours act as a statement piece to a comparably simple outfit, whilst also protecting against icy winds. Furry bags and earrings are fun accessories to contrast against traditional winter fabrics such as wool and leather. What is definitely going to be the fashionista’s coveted new wardrobe addition are textured heels. Feather detailing on heels returned to fashion with the lingerie as outerwear trend resurfaced in the late 2010s, but this season the trend had taken it to a whole new level. Definitely a trend that comes around like clockwork so take a bit of time and invest in a long lasting piece.
- Nakey nakey nakey?
Sheer was forecasted as a 2023 trend by Instagram’s head of fashion Eva Chen, who predicted we were going to see it all year long. And clearly she’s not wrong. Cooler temperatures lend themselves to layering so there’s no need to let go of your favourite summer sheers, they can easily be made winter translucent. Just add a thick coat and boots to your favourite outfit and it’s winter ready. If you didn’t dabble into sheer this summer, try some pieces with sheer panels as an entry point or some chiffon opera length gloves to add glamour and class to any black tie outfit.
- Did you forget something?
The pantless trend was a look presented in the AW23 collections that we were sure would translate into real life wardrobes. Although a bit brave, the look is exceptionally easy to achieve as you only need to layer a pair of full briefs or high leg knickers over tights. If you want to fully commit you can even match the pants to a matching knitted cardigan. Where the doubt lies however, is the practicality for every day. With sheer fabrics, lingerie as outerwear and low necklines becoming seasonless trends, wearing revealing clothing is far from shocking to most. But no trousers in the dead of winter may be a step too far. However, this fashion month we’ve seen celebrities, influencers and fashion professionals alike confidently strutting in their tiny shorts. Plus, if you swap the warm toned hues for metallic ones this trend is simply a reintegration of the 2010s disco shorts trend that trickled down to every high street store. So if you have nothing to wear and are struggling with layering, just don’t! Like they say; first they laugh, then they copy.
