Star Signs And Shades, Guap Introduces @jupitergreyuk
When asked the meaning behind his name he replied, Jupiter being the revolving planet around his star sign “Sagittarius”, and Grey, because his music is neither black nor white.
Meet Jupiter Grey
Think The Weekend, meets Stevie Wonder spilled over sound sculpted electronic RnB. Jupiter Grey is a new age experimental Rnb/Neo Soul artist. His music diverse enough to be relatable to many differing demographics. Although his sound is predominantly Rnb based, elements of pop are assuredly situated in the midst of the piano reverb and drum pads.
Jupiter’s first introduction to music came at the age of 11 years old, when he started singing at his local church, channelling his euphonious vocal expression, he joined a duo with his friend which was the birth of their RnB act “Analysis”. Analysis took Jupiter from his local Sunday retreat, into the Sony offices aged just 15 years old where he was in talks with the record label about a deal for the duo which negligently, due to managerial issues didn’t go through.
Disheartened by the leisurely pace in progress after his meetings at Sony, Jupiter impulsively decided to fly to Canada on a whim and independently perform at music venues. In between working and laying low on an industry angle, Jupiter unremittingly penned down songs and diarised his thoughts on experimental instrumentals. Years later, boasting a Shoreditch/Camden swagger in his attire and a polished and trained vocal performance on every song, Jupiter Grey has the potential to become a trendsetter for experimental RnB stemming from the U.K. Jupiter’s latest musical undertaking was in September 2016 until mid summer this year, which saw him study and graduate from up and coming industry recognised music school, Notting Hill Academy Of Music. Presently, Jupiter is polishing the finishing touches to his EP “Wounded Soul” which is set for release in early 2018.
Rae: Jupiter, your latest release “Taken From Me” has an atmospheric/ spacey tone, but we have seen upbeat and sanguine music from you. What inspires you and what lane do you feel best suited to musically ?
Jupiter: I’m experimental with my sound, and appreciate good music, God, my family, friends and everyday experiences inspire me, I write about how I feel whether it be good or bad. Musically I look up to artists like Bryan McKnight, Stevie Wonder and I love Brandy. I’m listening to a lot of Sza, Ray BLK, Sampha and Frank Ocean currently. I just wanna bring back that 90’s RnB tone on to today’s contemporary beats.
Rae: After taking a break from music and revisiting the industry with a new image and sound, where do you see yourself in 5 years ?
Jupiter: In the next 5 years I see myself 3 projects in, a debut album and touring the world.
Rae: Would you sign to a major or prefer to be independent?
Jupiter: Being musically dependant for yourself is always a fulfilling achievement, but if given the opportunity I would sign to a major label, they can execute you in areas you may find are difficult to reach alone.
Rae: With the U.K being a tastemaker for international musical direction as of late, what is your take on today’s U.K music scene ?
Jupiter: Dope! Everyone’s doing bits, and urban music is finally getting its own shine and not waiting on the industry to get the recognition they deserve. The U.K is surpassing a lot of musical genres as a whole, with strong artists at the forefront! We have greats like Adele and Sam Smith emanating from the U.K, but on a cultural and DIY level you cannot beat the urban scene as it stands currently.
Skilfully etched electronic RnB release “Taken From Me” is out now on all major platforms.
