Ghana’s Oroko Radio Celebrates Its First Anniversary
Last month Accra’s creative community celebrated the first anniversary of Oroko Radio, the not-for-profit internet radio station based in the capital.
Since the radio’s launch at the Freedom StakePark a year ago, it has excelled at its goal of building bridges, spotlighting artists, and being a platform for pushing creatives. For one year, the sonically masterful collective has gone through the process of putting a diverse spin on what African music is and what it could very possibly be.
Its steadfast work in the creative community of Ghana has allowed the radio to gain much love. Its growth is beautiful to see, as the radio station hosts many local creative shows on it. With a sizeable diasporic audience, Oroko Radio has always been in the business of redefining the narrative of music in Africa through its tasteful methods of conversation, collaboration, and community for local artists.
The Oroko first Anniversary event has a lot of promise for Ghanaian music and its creative community.
On the slated day at precisely 9 PM, the 1st-anniversary event kicked off at the same space it launched at, Freedom Skatepark. With Ballentines giving out drinks to guests, a beautiful light show on display, and an electric sound, the mood was just right for an epic night. As the epic event started, the community came out in their numbers and best outfits.
After a few mini sets from fellows in its new DJ mentorship program, the principal sets started with a slew of star-studded music acts such as All My Cousins, Anna Leonie, B. Frvnkie, Kikelomo, and many others. From a brilliant start to an even more thrilling finish around the early hours of 4:30 AM, the party felt electric, and the audience felt a sense of loss when things winded down. After celebrating one year of this internet radio station’s journey in grand style, the community returns in preparation for another full year of wonder as Oroko Radio recently announced a lot of new residents.
The future is bright for Oroko radio and its growing community. As this internet radio proceeds on its quest of empowering through conversation, collaboration, and community.
