ELV DENIM: A Lesson in Slow Fashion

ELV DENIM: A Lesson in Slow Fashion

Written by Noon Khouri

ELV Denim’s latest presentation on Oxford Street was more than just a showcase—it was an educational journey. Positioned amidst fast fashion giants, ELV’s presence felt like a deliberate disruption, challenging conventional retail with a narrative of slow, conscious fashion.

Upon entering the space, guests were guided through ELV’s meticulous process, moving in a circular flow from washing to sorting, pairing, and finally, patchworking. This immersive setup highlighted both the craftsmanship behind each piece and the brand’s commitment to sustainability, allowing visitors to witness a garment’s lifecycle from start to finish. It also showcased the artisans and small brands ELV collaborates with, offering a meaningful moment to celebrate the creatives behind the craftsmanship.

Conversations with guests revealed a shared appreciation for this transparency and educational approach. Many were excited to learn about the intricate techniques behind ELV’s creations, particularly the pleated denim and crochet bed linen. This hands-on storytelling resonated deeply, reinforcing the role of knowledge in sustainable fashion. A standout moment was watching artisans at work—guests spoke with the craftsman responsible for pleating and saw the results on models at the centre of the room. Another striking demonstration was ELV’s partnership with London hotels to repurpose old bedsheets into crochet yarn. Attendees watched as sheets were torn by hand before seeing them transformed into a crocheted dress—an eye-opening display of circular fashion in action.

The presentation itself was minimalistic yet impactful. Central models stood among others moving gracefully through the space, enhancing the immersive atmosphere. Guests admired the diverse casting in terms of race, gender, and age (though not size), while natural hair and make-up aligned with ELV’s ethos of authenticity. The models, chosen for their individuality, blended into the crowd while still showcasing the garments—creating a dynamic and accessible viewing experience.

One of the most valuable aspects of the presentation was the open dialogue between guests and ELV team members. Curious attendees could ask about garment materials, such as the repurposed corduroy on display, and gain insight into ELV’s collaborative approach with smaller brands—emphasising that true sustainability is a communal effort.

Unlike traditional catwalks, where garments flash by too quickly to fully appreciate, this format encouraged slow observation. Guests could study the craftsmanship, fabrics, and construction of each piece, making the experience more intimate and meaningful.

By placing this narrative on Oxford Street, ELV made a bold statement against the backdrop of mass production. This wasn’t just about showcasing garments; it was about reshaping perspectives on fashion and sustainability. Through understated elegance and thoughtful storytelling, ELV proved that knowledge truly is power in the journey towards conscious consumerism.
