Channel 4 & Emma Dabiri Are Bringing 15 People Together To Discuss Black Hair
From the production company that was a part of Netflix’s “The Disappearance of Madeline McCann and BBC’s The People Vs The NHS. Pulse Films is looking for black and mixed-race people to take part in a documentary for Channel 4 exploring how hair shapes the black experience in Britain.
In this one-off, hour-long documentary, (w/t) ‘’Black Hair Stories’, will explore the social and racial significance charged with black hair; from pop culture, pre-historic times, the transatlantic slave trade to cultural appropriation. Revealing the impact society has had on black hair and the impact that black hair has had on the world.
In ‘Black Hair Stories’ (w/t), academic, broadcaster and writer Emma Dabiri, whose critically acclaimed book Don’t Touch My Hair – is bringing fifteen people together to discuss the intricacies of their unique hair; from complex braiding to trimming afros, to sewing weaves, relaxing’ afro hair and more.
The documentary will be provocative, joyous, and heart-wrenchingly emotional. From relationships to racial slurs, hair ‘relaxer’ to politics, the intimate testimonies of these fifteen black women and men will lay bare the truth of the multi-faceted and complex black experience.
