Politics: Attending Black Lives Matter Protests? Remember This.
How To Protect Yourself When Protesting For Black Lives Matter.
Thousands of activists and supporters have joined protests in cities all over the world in the aftermath of George Floyd’s murder at the time of his arrest on May 25th. Protestors are also marching in the name of 29-year-old Regis Korchinski-Paquet who was a black woman, killed by police in her home. 25-year-old Ahmaud Arbery and 26-year-old Breonna Taylor who we’re also recently shot and killed on separate racially charged incidents. In the midst of the covid:19 pandemic, the black lives matter movement has come in full force and is not only relevant to the black lives in America. But also, the black lives in Berlin, Toronto, and London where thousands have taken to the streets to protest systematic racism and police brutality.
At GUAP Magazine, we stand by those who are brave enough to go out and protest. However, it is important to remember that we are still living in a world where Covid:19 is taking lives. Black people and people of colour are especially at risk of catching and dying from this disease. Take a look at our tips on being prepared and staying safe when protesting. Remember to protect yourself and those you love.
1. Masks & Gloves
We are still in a pandemic. Protect yourselves and loved ones by wearing a mask and gloves when protesting in a large crowd. As 2-meter social distancing at a protest will not be likely, it is crucial that you keep your mask and gloves on at all times.
2. Nondescript Clothing
Make sure you wear clothing that covers any identifying tattoos and flexible enough for the unpredictable U.K temperatures.
3. Bring Water & Snacks
Protesting is a day-long commitment. Whether you are protesting in a fixed location or marching in your local area. Ensure that you have enough water & snacks to keep you hydrated and energised throughout the day.
4. Bring A First Aid Kit
Protests tend to escalate very quickly. So whether you trip and fall or get a paper cut from your protest sign. Make sure that you are equipped with a travel first aid kit so you can immediately tend to yourself or someone around you.
5. Record Everything
We are fortunate to live in a time where we can record EVERYTHING on our smartphones. So do not be afraid to press record if you see any misconduct with the police force towards protestors.
