AfroPunk Festival – Afrocentric Vibes and Soulful Sounds [@Afropunk]
AFROPUNK FESTIVAL LONDON 2017
Sunday night marked the end of AfroPunk Festival 2017. The weekend festival aimed in celebrating black culture and equality amongst all people who walk on this earth. From the vibrant hairstyles to the chic attire, AfroPunk brought out London’s black poster children for what it means to be black in 2017,.
There was a sense of pride emitting from attendees who looked right at home in the Afrocentric stalls that filled the market hall of The Printworks Venue in South London. From budding entrepreneurs to established fashion designers, the event eluded elements of positive black aesthetics that had you smiling with pride as your eyes glimpsed over their creations. From the eclectic sounds of Nao to the soothing waves of The Internet, AfroPunk spoiled us with the level of talent that graced the Afropunk Stage.
With the constant negative media that is used to portray black culture it is refreshing to see an international platform that focuses on the Positive accolades of people of colour. Afropunk conveys the message that although we are classed as ‘black’ we are diverse and stem from many different branches of life. The festival represents those who refuse to let the media driven image of black people tarnish their love for their heritage and their roots.
Attendees of Afropunk do not fit into the mould that has been created for black people , they thrive to represent their stripes and fight to be heard in times of injustice. The festival came at a time when black people needed something to celebrate. Events such as Afropunk serve as an important part of the culture as it is able to uplift, inspire and bring together “minorities” alike who share the same vision of life, to live free.
The spectrum of businesses exhibiting at the festivals consisted of Jewelers, Fashion designers, artists, beauticians, authors, activists and many more. It was a creative pot that overflowed with innovation and tradition that reinforced my encouragement in buying from black businesses.
