Sister Midnight is Lewisham’s first community owned music venue

Sister Midnight has been on a mission to open Lewisham’s first community-owned venue since 2021. They have finally found a home in the former Brookdale Club in Catford.

The Brookdale Club pre-Sister Midnight renovation

“It might not be much of a looker at the moment, but with some TLC, community spirit, and a big old chunk of cash, we’ll be able to restore the building to its former glory, transforming it into a cultural hub that’s accessible for all” said the campaigners.

Sister Midnight is determined to keep the community at the center of its mission, backed by over 800 investors. It will be democratically run across its members. Amenities will include:

  • a private outdoor yard
  • a 250-capacity live music venue
  • a rehearsal studio space
  • a community cafe

They aim to showcase local talent with their arts and music programming and run community-center events.

Over the last two years, the campaigners have raised over a quarter million. They are currently fundraising for the final stage. The organisers have secured a seven-year rent-free lease with Lewisham’s council support. However, the building needs considerable renovation to be brought up to a trading standard.
