Willow Smith Makes A Statment About Mental Health Through Performance Art

Willow Smith spent 24 hours trapped in a glass box at the Museum of Contemporary Art’s Geffen Contemporary in Los Angeles as part of a performance art piece. She carried out the performance with collaborator boyfriend, Tyler Cole. The pair were promoting their band “The Anxiety” and during the performance, the two explored the eight different phases of anxiety, concluding with Tyler shaving Willow’s head at the end of the performance.

One half of the duo – Tyler Cole – later posted the video to Instagram, captioning it “I’m going to need some time to process that experience before I really say anything but I will say thank you so much to everyone who came out to MOCA and watched the live stream. I am truly overwhelmed. There is a lot going on in the world and I think THE ANXIETY reflects how a lot of us feel right now. So hopefully this music and the art we are creating can help you in any way even if it’s just a quick distraction from all of this chaos. @theanxiety debut album out now.”

Willow Smith told The Los Angeles Times that her own anxiety was triggered by events like the death of Kobe Bryant and his daughter, Gianna Bryant. She hoped that their work would convey these feelings in a genuine and meaningful way.
