‘We Need More Women In Here’ – The Powerful New Documentary Shedding Light On Women In UK Music

Women often face discrimination in music. Director, Ignitious Moyo, set out to discover why we need more women in here.

In February, Forbes reported that the “Inclusion in the Recording Studio” study found that women make up just 21.7 percent of artist roles, 12.3 percent of songwriters and 2.1 percent of producers. Dr. Stacy L. Smith, who leads on the report, commented on the wider analysis titled ‘USC Annenberg Inclusion Initiative’.

” The perception of women is highly stereotypical, sexualised, and without skill. Until those core beliefs are altered, women will continue to face a roadblock as they navigate their careers.”

The UK is no different in this terrain. However, Style and Sound, a platform dedicated to “styles and sounds that make the UK culture unique” have crafted a documentary that exposes the issue on an intersectional level. Premiered in August, ‘We Need More Women In Here’ sheds light on the likes of Nadia Jae, Alex Ampofo, Lovelle and other women that work in music and face gender-driven obstacles.
