THE BREAKDOWN: YINKA’S [OLAYINKAEHI] ‘LET’S GET ROMANTIC’

Let’s Get Romantic

This was actually the first demo I made for the EP. I had tweeted about it before I went to the studio to meet my producer Chris Potter. The goal was to talk about the lack of intention and love within this generation. It talks about loving someone deeply with their consent (of course) and bringing back old romance in a way that fits in today’s environment. Love letters, flowers, whatever your love language is, etc. The EP is called Let’s Get Romantic because I see it as a positive movement, a reminder to try again, to be intentional and fully present, whether it’s with friends, lovers, etc…. It’s saying let’s give a fuck again.

Flowers

This is honestly my new favorite. It’s the last song on the EP not because it closes it well, but literally because it was the last song I wrote for the EP. There are actually different versions because I wanted to come from a personal view that everyone can also appreciate and FEEL. It’s about the constant back and forth with love. Getting heartbroken but still facing love again and again because we know there’s true love out there. I’m a lover girl so the lyrics can have different messages, but it’s really how you listen and take it in. The goal of the song is to encourage everyone to keep falling even when you haven’t gotten ‘your flowers’ yet.

Interlude

‘Interlude’ is the baby of the project. We took a poetic Bridgerton approach. I’m a lover of orchestras so this was my moment to be dramatic. The producer Shae Jacobs worked on giving the track this grand moment, while Oluwagbeminiyi and I sat in a room and finished the poem. It’s in the middle of the EP because it reminds you what this project is about — a gentle push deeper into your feelings.

Die Loving You  

This is such a beautiful, dramatic song. It’s the most passionate song on the project. “Die” being in the title can sound a bit dark but it’s actually a beautiful confession of love. I want to love you till the end, till I’m no longer because that’s how much I love you. It was actually inspired by a can of the water company Liquid Death lol. We were listening through beats and I wrote the hook in like 2 seconds, then we finished. I feel like it belongs in a passionate movie scene or something. “Die Loving You” is the couple goals I think of. Let’s ride it out till the end vibes.

Two Weeks

‘Two Weeks’ is a true story about my HINGE dating experience. It was my first match on the app. We met up and the date literally continued for two weeks. We actually had to halt and realise it’s only been two weeks. Hence “it feels like a lifetime with you, but it’s only been two weeks.” I got in the studio and wrote it so fast because I was so inspired. It came after my personal journey of not giving a fuck and finally deciding to give love a chance again, going on this app, and then boom! Two weeks is about a honeymoon period of meeting someone and aligning without effort. There are some bars in there too like “Why do we fit so perfectly, irregular like puzzle pieces but perfect when put together.” “Two Weeks” is about not expecting and receiving something beautiful.
