Rise up and prevent Islamophobia with [@mendcommunity]

In light of this week’s news of US President Trump retweeting some video posts that were originally posted by a far right British group, it seems fitting to talk about the fact that it’s currently Islamophobia awareness month.

The last year has been filled with news reports of a US president that seems to attack all kinds of innocent people with his comments.

The US president retweeted anti-Muslim videos that were first shared by the deputy leader of a British far right group. Note that the deputy leader is also on bail for charges of hate crime. Also note, that at the time of the murder of Labour MP Jo Cox in 2016, the perpetrator shouted out the name of this group.

Calls for a further boycott of Trump’s invitation to visit to the UK have been raised in response to the incident.

On this side of the pond, an organisation called MEND (Muslim Engagement and Development) have been campaigning to raise awareness of, and prevent, Islamophobia and are running an Islamophobia awareness month #IAM2017

MEND is a not-for-profit company that helps to empower and encourage British Muslims within local communities to be more actively involved in British media and politics.

The awareness month will soon be coming to an end, but it’s up to us to make sure that awareness of the issue continues to happen throughout the year. Islamophobia is real and it’s happening now.
