Gucci Is Going Seasonless Showcasing Collections Twice A Year

Gucci has tapped out of this year’s fashion weeks schedule deciding to go seasonless in order to produce less, in the desire to allow more room for the creative process. Less pressure for designers to creates bringing the purpose and fun back to fashion week as well as taking out the excessive waste that comes with hosting multiple fashion weeks. Saint Laurent, has also announced its intention to skip Paris Fashion Week this September and we wonder which brands will be following suit.

“I will abandon the worn-out ritual of seasonalities and shows to regain a new cadence, closer to my expressive call,” – Alessandro Michele

In Gucci’s ‘notes from the silence‘ Instagram post series,’ Alexandro Michele writes about some of the thoughts he has been reflecting on during this tragic time. Its clear through the posts a lot of inner battles and conversations have gone on within the brand’s team on the damage the industry has done to the earth or as Alexandro has put the ‘reckless actions have burned the house we live in “.

We have seen time after time, the fashion calendar is excessive and causes waste. Collections begin to go on sale before the next collection and alot of products are left unworn and unused. This is a huge problem for our planet, considering the amount of none renewable resources used. Another issue that arises from the pressure to always create something new is that brands are not reusing old materials from collections and not replenishing the planet from the resources the fashion industry keeps taking from.  A perfect example to illustrate this is a strain, the fashion industry takes a resource squeezes out the key elements it needs and allows the rest to go to waste whilst not making the effort to rebuild and replant the resources taken.

The coronavirus has forced us to take a step back, slow down and rethink whether the systems we have in place are working or not and with the extra time to reflect we have seen alot of designers stepping up to talk about the changes that need to be made ,Gucci is another brand joining the new era of fashion. We’ve seen the planet healing in such a short space of time from the damage caused by various industries being put on hold including the fashion industry, with more and more brands deciding to go against the fashion calendar we may have hope for the planet’s future after all.
