Entrepreneur, Marty McDonald gathered over 15,000 virtually for the Boss Women Media’s annual Black Girl Magic summit. In 2016, Marty founded the platform with the aim to connect with women who wanted more. After a successful brunch held within the same year, she established the foundation for the brand identifying there was an opportunity to help women cultivate the life they desired. In 2018, Marty left her corporate job of 8 years, taking the leap of faith to pursue Boss Women Media full-time.

This year Marty had to pivot the direction of the Black Girl Magic Summit due to the pandemic. This was the first time that she curated a digital event of this magnitude and was anticipating to create real impact. The 2-day digital experience brought a lot to the table for the women that attended, as they learnt about business ownership, leadership, confronting microaggression, customer service and more. Notable speakers included Tia Mowry, Meagan Good, Sheinelle Jones, Elaine Welteroth alongside many more incredible women.

Marty took things to the next level by pouring into the community through investment via a virtual pitch competition. Sponsored by Capital One, a partner of the summit donated $50,000 to the competition. Elite Kids came in first place, winning the $25,000 grand prize for the best pitch. Following Elite Kids, ShearShare left with $15,000 and Snag My Wedding left with $10,000. The impeccable event brought women together during a racial pandemic, empowering, uplifting, and inspiring them during a time they needed it the most.

As a Black woman that transitioned from working in the corporate world to an entrepreneur, we asked Marty what advice she would give to other women looking to make this transition:

“The advice I would give to another Black women is for her to be clear on why she wants to do it. Becoming an entrepreneur has been hands down the hardest thing I have ever done, but the reward in itself is great; as this is something that I have built. I would advise them to be very clear, who are you impacting? Your impact has to be greater than you, as it is going to be hard and at times you may want to quit. However, the impact has to be greater than you, which will encourage and motivate you to stay along the race.”
