Five For Friday ft [@greentea_peng], [@bryannonly], [@jnrchoi_], + more

Five For Friday is back again with 5 releases from the past week you should pay attention to.

Five for Friday is back again giving you 5 great tracks/projects for your Friday. Friday is essentially the most important day of the week musically, and typically a lot of music drops on Friday’s. Friday is the day that the official charts are announced letting us know who holds the coveted number one position. To make life a little easier this Friday we are giving you 5 of our top picks that have recently dropped to start off your weekend listening.

Latanya Alberto – Royal

Taken from her forthcoming EP due for release in April, her third EP after Ruminate and Cede, ‘Royal (Recall)’ is a sublime dose of sultry neo-soul with a 2021 edge. Latanya’s honey-toned vocals glide throughout the self-penned track, which touches on black history, trauma and its effect on love. The track follows previous singles ‘Trouble’ and ‘Red Flags’, which saw Latanya make her mesmerising COLORS debut at the end of last year.

JNR CHOI – Reality

JNR CHOI last night gave us his most personal record to date highlighting just some of the reasons he does the things he does. Despite this deeper message, he loses none of the stylistic flair that has made his previous offerings so appealing and well received. Instead with the added depth to the songwriting, we get a new dimension to the artist we have so far only seen giving off more braggadocios vibes on his previous records. Visually things are kept pretty simple but have appearances from a few of his family members which is a nice touch considering the subject matter. It is a light switch up but a welcome addition to his musical arsenal.

Digga D – Made In The Pyrex

With the drop of his Made In The Pyrex mixtape Digga D proves again he is the star we think he is. Although the bonus edition is 13 tracks long it has a run time of just over half an hour and across it, we see multiple sides to the West London star. Just a couple of standouts for me are ‘My Brucky’, which samples Nines‘s ‘AJ’d Out’, ‘Windows’ which sees a more Jamaican influence come through, and ‘No Chorus’ which features Brum’s man of the moment M1llionz. This is without even mentioning ‘Woi’, ‘Chingy’, ‘Bringing It Back’, ‘Bluuwuu’ and ‘Toxic’ that we heard prior to the project’s release. It is a project full of hits and one well worth the listen.

Greentea Peng – Nah It Ain’t The Same

Rising star Greentea Peng today shares her first taster of new music this year and a teaser for what to expect from her highly anticipated debut album with ‘Nah It Ain’t The Same’. Together with her live bang, they present something fresh and entrancing; hip hop and jazz inflections, neo soul rhythms which flourish into a beat which nods to classic drum & bass and signature sage vocals enveloping the instrumentation. Creating a fluid and freewheeling listening experience, ‘Nah It Ain’t The Same’ sounds like it could come from no one else but Greentea Peng.

Bryann – Longé

22 year old Lagos native Bryann makes his debut release ‘Longé’ this Friday. It is an infectious Afro-Pop record that can’t help but make you want to dance. Taking influence largely from Afro-Pop and Alté dance is at the heart of the record with it exploring courting through the medium of dance. ‘Longé’ is an exciting burst onto the scene for the young star who has already worked with some important names amongst the scene such as Kel-P, Oxlade and Blaqbonez amongst others. This is clearly just the start of things to come and is the first teaser we have of his upcoming EP.
