Detty December Fashion: What People Wore in Ghana

December is the time of the year in African countries like Nigeria and Ghana when people come together to celebrate the end of the year and kick off the holiday season with music, dancing, and a lot of fabulous fashion. People travel in from all over, especially black people from the US and the UK. This homecoming and season of endless partying have in recent years been coined as “Detty December.”

Ghana without a doubt takes the lead in the Detty December festivities, considering that it is home to Afrofuture (previously called Afrochella), Afronation and a myriad of events that attract revellers from all over the world. With Ghana’s Beyond The Return – a reparation program encouraging Africa and the Diaspora to visit the motherland and forge closer ties- already in motion, last year’s Detty December was no exception, the turnout was superb and the parties were filled with stellar lineups of artists. Each event came with people pulling out all the stops to bring their A-game when it came to style choices.

The traditional touch was a style staple: Many festival goers took the opportunity to celebrate their cultural heritage by incorporating traditional fabrics and designs into their outfits. From brightly coloured kente clothes, and batiks to elaborate beadwork and embellishments. When it comes to Detty December, there’s no such thing as overdoing it when it comes to sparkle and shine. Sequins, glitter, pops of colour and metallic fabrics were all popular choices for party dresses, and there was no shortage of glamour on the dance floor. And for those who love the laid-back look, sneakers, jeans, graphic t-shirts and casual streetwear were the popular choices.

The entire month was a fashion lover’s dream, with many fantastic personal style choices and style aesthetics on display. There was something for everyone, and it was clear that people put a lot of thought and effort into their outfits. We can’t wait to see what this year’s Detty December has in store!
