What went down at Mr Eazi’s [@mreazi] Detty Rave Festival [@TheDettyRave]

December in Nigeria and Ghana is probably the busiest time of year for both countries. From beach parties to festivals, concerts to weddings, the streets across Lagos and Accra are bustling with activity. Last year was no exception as Afropop superstar and Empawa Africa founder Mr Eazi was on deck to put the ‘Detty’ back into Ghana’s ‘Detty December’ holiday festivities with the biggest edition of his Detty Rave festival.

The Detty Rave was introduced in 2017 by Mr Eazi. Across the first three editions, The Detty Rave has pulled an all star cast of international superstars from all parts of the world to Accra including Jamaican superstars Koffee and Kranium, UK rapper and songwriter Giggs, singer/songwriter Afro B, American rapper Rick Ross along with a stellar lineup of top African DJs and rising stars. With the backing of companies such as BetPawa, Trace Ghana, Max TV and Uber serving as partners, last year’s Detty Rave was no exception.

After a long two-year break due to the global pandemic, The Detty Rave returned on the 27th December 2022, to The Rave Grounds at Untamed Empire in Accra, Ghana. A total of 11,000 ravers were ready to have the time of their lives at the festival. The EDM – style production added a futuristic, otherworldly feel, transporting ravers to another realm, which is a first for an Afrobeats event.

If you go to festivals or concerts, one of the first things most people do is look out for the lineup. Mr Eazi decided to do things differently as no artists were announced ahead of the festival and the whole lineup was kept on the down-low. “I was hellbent on people coming for the Detty Rave brand itself, knowing they are going to see good production and have a good experience. Their faith was definitely rewarded, as this has been called the best organised event in Accra this December.”

He was definitely right as the lineup of DJs and artists really didn’t disappoint. DJs and performers on the night included Nigeria’s very own Crayon, singer/songwriter Joeboy, The Therapist and DJ Neptune; Reggae- Dancehall artist Shatta Wale, Highlife and Afrobeats singer/songwriter King Promise, Hip Hop artist Medikal, Hiplife duo R2Bees and DJ Aroma from Ghana; South Africa’s singer/songwriter Ami Faku and Amapiano stars Uncle Vinny and Major League DJz; and the UK’s very own DJ Edu. Mr Eazi was the Creative Director for the event but also served as the Host for the night keeping everyone super entertained and engaged.

Following the success of last year’s edition, it is no surprise that Mr Eazi is looking to take The Detty Rave worldwide, with anticipated events to take place in South and East Africa later this year. He also has plans to take the festival to Europe and North America next year.

Keep on the lookout for updates on The Detty Rave. You never know when it’s going to come to a city near you! If you do find yourself in Ghana this December, The Detty Rave needs to be at the top of your list – you are definitely in for a great time!
