PIANO PEOPLE – LONDON’S BUZZING AMAPIANO ISLAND FOR THE DAY
Play, dance, party. Piano People defined what it meant to have a good time on the 23rd of August as it disrupted Southwark Park with a star studded lineup. Centring the Piano People in everything they do, the afrocentric dance festival continued their Amapiano celebrations into the late summer night – headlined by Amapiano Godfathers Scorpion Kings to bring the groove to the bank holiday.
As their first outdoor festival, Piano People transformed Southwark Park into a secluded island where lovers of Amapiano bounced to its punchy bassline, and eclectic waves of piano keys. The intoxicating rhythms of the genre was conjured by its incredible pioneers and influential artists, Oskido, Scorpio Kings, Zakes Bantwini, Young Stunna, and Thakzin, as well as performances from Mawhoo.
What’s a festival without a buzzing crowd ?! Amapiano’s loyal attendees made sure to represent their countries with cultural pride, carrying bright flags from South Africa, Botswana, Zimbabwe, and Cameroon, and gracing the festival with stunning outfits that perfectly encapsulated the Afro-Diaspora’s range of style.
Surrounded by the sweet flavours from the motherland, flowing bar taps, an NHS sickle cell activation tent, and the Groove Station, the supporting spaces that decorated the park championed and embodied the beloved sounds emanating from the main stage.
London’s newest one-day festival was set to make the city the undisputed Amapiano hotspot
outside it’s home, South Africa. It’s safe to say Piano People 2024 delivered, and we can’t wait to groove to the next one!
