The 2022 Met Gala, Sadly, Was A Famine of Fashion

It’s been a few days since the Super Bowl of fashion returned to New York for its 2022 edition themed ‘Gilded Glamour and White Tie’. 

This year’s theme was inspired by America’s Gilded Age, a period between the 19th–20th century, an age of grandiosity and wealth; and as always, the bar for the Met Gala is high, but, as always, only a few passed the test. We’ve had some time to digest the looks, so here are the best and worst outfits from the night.

WORST DRESSED

The Kar-Jenner family

If misunderstanding the assignment were personified, it would be every member of the Kardashian family. Besides completely missing the theme, the outfits were just bad: a snapback, awkward ruffles and ill-fitting gowns; there wasn’t a single hit. Even with Kim Kardashian wearing Marilyn Monroe’s iconic dress, it’s clear that fashion was the strong point of one former family member.

Emma Stone

As the star of Disney’s Cruella, I assume Emma Stone has access to an endless wardrobe of gowns and costumes, so why she turned up in something resembling a nightgown or Swan Lake dress, I will never know. The effort given was a one, and it showed. 

Anna Wintour

Everyone knows Anna Wintour loves a good uniform, from the dark shades to the sharp bob, and clearly, she has her Met Gala uniform perfected. Replicating her look from 2017 and 2019, her outfit featured a lot of feathers but didn’t give anything except déjà vu.

Emily Ratajowski

We all love a vintage Versace, but this wasn’t it. A mess from head to toe.

Best Dressed

Blake Lively

Since we’re talking about glamour and dramatic fashion, nobody embodied that better than Blake Lively. She was one of the co-chairs of the event, and it’s clear she did her homework, from the architectural references to the transformation of the gown –every part of the look was thought out in detail, and it showed.

SZA

Vivienne Westwood is the go-to when it comes to corsets, ruffles and period fashion with a modern twist, so it was a no brainer that her work would appear on the famous staircase. Worn by SZA, the bright pink number was right on theme and even gave us an edge with some latex evening gloves and thigh-high boots.

Laura Harrier

Looking like she stepped off the set of Bridgerton, model and actress Laura Harrier represented 19th-century style from head to toe. Her slicked-back hair with large pearls, the square neck corset with a wide crinoline skirt, and the velvet evening gloves all screamed lady of the manor–and the best part is, her dress was from H&M. On theme and on a budget.

Stormzy

For his first Met Gala, Stormzy and his team pulled out all the stops. Styled by Melissa’s Wardrobe, the rapper wore a custom-made, crisp white Burberry suit, which couldn’t be more glamorous. Details such as the patent leather shoes, the satin lapels, and the long cape complemented the overall aesthetic of opulence. 

Cardi B

At first glance, this look is just a beautiful gown, but like most of Cardi’s red carpet moments, every element is intentional and true to who Cardi is. The gold chain gloves and fishtail look hit the nail on the head in displaying glamour; but they also speak to the history of female rappers like Cardi B, who, in the 80s and 90s, wore gold chains and earrings to help them add a level of bling to their personas.

Her stylist, Kollin Carter, is the perfect example of what it looks like to have a team do their homework and personalise it to make a memorable look.
