Art & Photography: Banksy Makes An Anti-Racism Statment In The Midst of The 2020 Black Lives Matter Movement
Banksy says “This is a white problem”
Amid worldwide protests against police brutality and systematic racism, Banksy has shared a new anti-racism piece of artwork alongside a statement that calls for white people’s support and alliance in the Black Lives Matter movement.
The painting depicts a memorial scene for an anonymous victim, in which a lit candle is setting fire to the United States flag. The statement alongside it sees the anonymous graffiti artist states that “people of colour are being failed by the system. The white system”. He writes “this is a white problem. And if white people don’t fix it, someone will have to come upstairs and kick the door in”.
Black Lives Matter protests have been ignited in all 50 states in the US and have also spread to cities across the world, including London. Following the recorded murder of unarmed Black man, George Floyd by a police officer on May 25. Hundreds and thousands have taken to the streets to protest systematic racism and police brutality towards black people.
