Jordan Peele’s New Movie “Candyman” Has Ruined Destiny’s Child Classic For All Of Us {@jordanpeele}
Jordan Peele Gives Destiny’s Child Say My Name A Whole Different Meaning.
Jordan Peele has done it again! I never thought that there would be a day that Say My Name by legendary girl-group Destiny’s Child would turn from being a sassy conversation with my invisible boyfriend to the blood-curdling nightmare that is the new Candyman trailer. He has turned our favorite throwback track into the chilling soundtrack of his terrifying new movie.
But of course, this is not the first time Peele has turned an urban classic into an unexpected horror device, he successfully used the same technique in 2019 horror flick Us. Making Luniz’s I Got 5 On It, the haunting reminder of the iconic thriller. Jordan Peele’s slowed down remix of Say My Name, will have you experiencing gory flashbacks in the club and although terrifying, we are intrigued to know how Peele will take on this re-telling of the 1992 horror classic.
Over the last few years, Jordan Peele has completely re-defined the horror genre. Surpassing the expectations of fans and critics every-time. This new project with director Nia DaCosta teases his ability to create classic stories that will still maintain an element of surprise and thrill to his audience. Like Get Out and Us, Peele comments on socioeconomic and sociopolitical issues that face people of colour in the United States. DaCosta and Peele’s version of the classic story will speak on the gentrification of Chicago’s Cabrini-Green neighborhood. Candyman will be sure to strike up many debates amongst the viewers about the effects of gentrification in low-income neighborhoods and we are ready for it!
Starring Teyonah Parris, Nathan Stewart-Jarrett, Vanessa Williams, Kyle Kaminsky, Colman Domingo, and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II. Candyman hits theatres this summer and I myself cannot wait to SAY HIS NAME.
Here’s the official description:
For as long as residents can remember, the housing projects of Chicago’s Cabrini Green neighborhood were terrorized by a word-of-mouth ghost story about a supernatural killer with a hook for a hand, easily summoned by those daring to repeat his name five times into a mirror. In present day, a decade after the last of the Cabrini towers were torn down, visual artist Anthony McCoy (Yahya Abdul-Mateen II) and his girlfriend, gallery director Brianna Cartwright (Teyonah Parris), move into a luxury loft condo in Cabrini, now gentrified beyond recognition and inhabited by upwardly mobile millennials.
With Anthony’s painting career on the brink of stalling, a chance encounter with a Cabrini Green old-timer (Colman Domingo) exposes Anthony to the tragically horrific nature of the true story behind Candyman. Anxious to maintain his status in the Chicago art world, Anthony begins to explore these macabre details in his studio as fresh grist for paintings, unknowingly opening a door to a complex past that unravels his own sanity and unleashes a terrifyingly viral wave of violence that puts him on a collision course with destiny.
