GUAP Chats To [@Flyo13]
After working with some of the big hip hop stars in the UK, Flyo has quickly proven himself and his supporters what he is made of and what he can create whilst in the studio. Flyo is a Producer from North London. I caught with him ahead of his latest single ‘Rap Hittas Ft. Suspect, Skrapz & Tiny Boost’.
Who are you and what do you do?
I’m Flyo and what do is amazingness. I make music, make beats and I’m DJ, going where the wind takes me really.
Describe your beats and your sound in three words.
Could go anywhere ????.
The influences, the way they work… I don’t know with everyone else but with me I don’t sit and try and do something. If I like a song or a group I feel no way about banging out their music at all times. It just seeps in over the years so everyone that I’ve listened to that I really properly took in, probably influenced my sound in some way but not always on a conscious level.
What age did you start listening to hip-hop?
I was in primary school. My dad works in music and my mum loves music. There was a buzz about Nas from early on, they had ‘Illmatic’ and from that I naturally expanded I started off with Nas and he’s from Queensbridge so I found out a bit more and then I had Jay’s album. My parents had loads of CDs so when I got to a certain age and had a Hi-Fi in my room I’d just go in the CD collection and see which one would take my fancy. I found Wu Tang’s 36 Chambers, All Eyez On Me by Tupac, all the others I had to buy myself.
Do you have a theme when creating beats?
I honestly don’t. It can go anywhere it’s just how it comes out.
When did you start picking up the keystone then, How old were you?
I was 15 but I wasn’t taking it seriously it was just another hobby. I started to take it seriously when I was about 17/18, I thought about producing as an actual career when I found out Dr. Dre made all his beats. I remember hearing California Love in my mums car (she loved it).
What was the first track you produced that popped off?
Suspect – FBG
How did you meet Suspect?
I met Suspect through a mutual friend of ours, Jesse James (he’s a rapper). He’s a good friend of mine and Jesse and Suspect are from the same area, they’ve known each other for years. After work in the studio, Jesse used to come to the studio and we used to mess around then one day he asked if he could bring a friend through and it was Suspect. We made the track from there.
When you travel do you ever pick up sounds then try to implement them into your music?
No, not from travelling but from listening, you don’t have to go to New York to get the New York sound, trap music you get to feel what it’s like to be in these places. Even when it comes to G-Funk, I can picture the palm trees.
What’s your Favourite Album?
Illmatic, I have loads of favourites but it was my first album in where I said “I’m going to listen this the whole way through”
Who would you like to work with?
Snoop Dogg, Styles P & Gucci Man
I was a big fan of Nipsey but rest in peace.
Anything you want to shout out?
I’ve got a project coming out in June also got a new single coming out!
